In spite of her best attempts
to berate me into submission,
I’m not (& will never be)
the person my mother wishes I was
In spite of years of her criticism
about my short stature and crazy curly hair,
I (finally) know I am beautiful
(tradition & I never clicked).
In spite of her insistence that
friends cannot be family,
mine have proven (repeatedly)
that we’re the family we’ve chosen
(our bond is stronger than blood).
In spite of the fact that my point of reference
for relationships was the most unstable couple,
(who happened to be) my parents,
I’ve found love with the best man I’ve ever met
(we’re their polar opposite).
