the futility of deterrence

Once upon a time,
I aspired to be
a (perfect) good girl
whose existence was validated
(solely) by making you proud.
But your expectations
& mine were mutually exclusive.
Your (belligerent) efforts
will never deter me
from becoming the woman
I never knew I could be.

  1. I can definitely detect the pain in these words, but I love the ending of the poem and the strength it shows, Samantha. I think that until we realize that we can’t live our lives in order to meet someone else’s unreasonable standards, we’ll never be happy. You are a strong and beautiful young woman, my friend, and you should be proud of who you are.
